Alernator wiring

Here's the wiring schematic for the alt., should be +, - and field used unless you're hooking up an electric choke too, that wire goes to the stator post.

is all of that really nesessary? I don't want a light and I have a toggle switch and a button instead of a key switch. Does that mean I need an external voltage regulator? Does anyone have a part number for this?

If you want conventional operation, use conventional wiring. All 64-73 (and later) had an external voltage regulator.

Here is what I'm working with. This was purchased by the PO and every other part he bought was wrong. I figured out a way to mount it that should work but now is the wiring. Can someone give me a part number to reference for the external regulator?

I don't know for sure but that looks like the same alternator that came out of my 66. I would get a wiring diagram for your model vehicle. Then look for a diagram for the alternator to identify which post is which. The 2 easy ones are the big red one (hot lead to battery side of starter solenoid) and a ground (should wire into harness and ground at voltage regulator). I would find a local mustang shop to source the correct regulator. You can also try visiting a shop that rebuilds alts and starters. They can wire this stuff in their sleep.
Verify everthing I said before you wire it.
Good luck.
