Default Mustang 289 with a Dual 4 Barrel setup

Hi Folks,
I am looking for some info for a friend who is not so much into surfing forums on the internet.
He has a Mustang Fastback (66ish) that has a 289 with a dual 4 barrel setup.

From what I have found on other websites this was a factory option. Can anybody point me in the right direction for finding info on these carbs and if the carbs are factory orginals.

There is nothing wrong with them, just gathering information.

Thank you for any help you may provide.

I have a 2x4 intake for a 289, its an old Edelbrock intake from the 60s, the only carbs that will fit it are Carter AFB types. So Edelbrock carbs would work, but if they are the old ones they will be Carter. The intake doesnt have large runners, and only smaller carbs will fit without working the intake. A 289 cant take much carb anyway, so the small ones will work best. There is no way of knowing what carbs you have unless you get a number from them and look it up.

As for being a factory option, I think it was a Shelby option but I dont think Ford offered it on their own. They are fun to look at and run ok when tuned right, mine is going on a T Bucket we are building.

I think Ford offered them from the factory dealers as an "after market" type deal. Edelbrock sells 500cfm 4bbls that are setup for dual quad applications. But yeah, you'd need a number off the carbs to find out what they actually are. Like Thumpin said, they're probably Carters.

Wow...dual 4 barrels on a 289. Even if you spin it to 7000rpm, it only needs like 550 cfm. Dual 500s would be total overkill, wouldn't you think? I have never tried to tune dual carbs, but from watching it, it is really an art and is not easy to get right.

See I am not the only scratching my head as to why a dealer would install dual quads. This is more of a curosity for me. Thanks for the input and if anybody else wants to chime, chime away even if you are LOL.

I wouldn't use dual 4bbls on anything except a tunnel ram on top of a large high rpm drag engine, but he says the guy already has the 2x4 intake, and good luck finding anything smaller than 500cfm that will work in a dual quad application on the intake he has.

Ford never offered multi-carbs on the 289 from the factory, but they offered over-the-counter kits for 4V, 4V high-rise, 3-2V high-rise, 2 4V low-rise, 2 4V high rise, and 4-2V Weber.

I had the 3 2V on my driver for years, and it actually ran very well. I also have a Carter AFB 2 4V setup, but it's never been installed. Chevy Offered a factory 2 4V WCFB intake on the small Chevy 56-61.

drivabilty wise a single 4 barell or a "six pak" 3 2bbls will work best on a 289, unless you have a big headed, high compression, nasty cammed, 8000 rpm 289......even then dual quads are all show, look at every dyno test comparing a single vs dual quads and the single wins every time, edelbrock makes an rpm airgap dual quad yet it makes less power than the single quad version, the only dual quad that makes more power is a tunnel ram and on a street car only the wieand small runner does that. A good tri power will do very well though, with 3 autolite or annular booster holley or demons on a good manifold.....that is the key......will make as much if not more hp than a single quad and have great fuel economy. I'm sure some will chime in and claim their dual quads make a bunch of power but mostly they make a bunch of sucking noise and make them think they make a bunch of power. The runners are too short on a dual quad dual plane intake the only way to really make more power with one is to run 2 TBI's especially the new ones like powerjection or ez-efi then the fuel will be more atomized and make up the low end and not depend on vac signal from a carb.

But with dual or tri power the linkage slides so unless your wot your only running on one carb. And yes duals and tripower was dealer installed parts.
