ford 9" rear end
I have a ford 9" out of my mustang that I am wondering if I can change it from an open to a locking.... is there a kit that can change them over?
Can I get a locking 9" third member and put it in the housing from the original open rear end?

i got the one from ford racing. the one I got was 31 spline, so make sure it'll with your current axles
but to answer your question: i don't see a reason (apart from axle spline count) why you can't put in a trac-loc
better said, i got one from quickperformance.com. they put Ford racing parts together for me.

I swapped mine out for a traction lok, bought the pumpkin off of craigs list and had a local mechanic do the rebuild and swap out the gears for 4.11 (I have an AOD) and you might as well have the clutch pack rebuilt (kits with the clutches are available)

The best known locking diff is the Detroit Locker™, which truly locks solid when appropriate. The 65 GT350 had them, and some later "drag pak" cars. They tended to unlock with a bang, scaring people, so mostly only those in the know who really wanted them had them. Newer versions are not so violent.

I am wondering the same thing. I am building a 66 restomod. I researched improving the stock 8" rear end with gears and a traction device. I also researched doing the same for a 9". They were the same cost. So, I found a 9" housing that will work and I want to change the gears and add a traction device.
The frist question is: Is there a vehicle in the wrecking yard that I can buy a used 9" 28 spline center section with a traction device? Through research I found out that many ford trucks in the late 60's and early 70's had the same 28 spline housing as mine with taller gears and a traction device. Some time in the early mid 70's ford went with 31 spline center sections and axles.
The second question is: If I find a 31 spline center section with the gears and traction device can I change out some of the internals to fit 28 spline axles?

You found a 9" axle housing that has the proper width for your '66? Or you found a 9" center section? In case you're not aware, you can't bolt a 9" center into an 8" housing.
To answer your second question, the axles are splined to the differential. If you get a 31-spline trac-loc unit, you need 31 spline axles, or a 28 spline trac-loc unit.
