Default Can you help me tell what my 429ci is?

Hi,

I got the 429 4V pulled from my '73 and am getting ready to rebuild and get some power out of this monster block.... I need help telling exactly what I have.

Casting # by starter: D1VE-A2B ('71 Lincoln 429/460 3rd casting)

Questions:
Where do I find the casting #'s for the heads?
Is there a way to tell if the engine is a 429 or 460 without checking the stroke?
How much HP are these blocks good to?
What aftermarket heads work great with these blocks?
Any other additional info would be great.

Thanks for the help,
Ryan

The head casting #'s are above the spark plugs just under the lip of the valve covers. What heads to run depends more on how much power you want to have.Watch these two videos http://www.spike.com/full-episode/bu...ig-block/31583 and http://www.spike.com/full-episode/fo...back-for/32053 these big blocks can make some big numbers for parts look around on http://www.jonkaaseracingengines.com/

Nice videos....I remember when they put that HorsePower TV on television.
I went back to the 429 this morning and found the head casting #'s to be D3VE-A2A. So with block D1VE-A2B, my question is how should I build this engine to get the most bang for the buck...my pockets are not that deep, I just want to do it right the first time.

How would you build this 429ci up?
Do I bore and stroke it?
I know its all about the heads, so do I need to buy some different heads or just have these one worked over?
I'd like to have around a 6000-6500 redline...
I'm probaly looking to put this engine into my '69 Mustang Fastback bolted to a Tremec 5 spd. when completed so aprox 500hp/500torque would be around my goal.

Thanks for all your help,
Ryan

Your heads are 73 used in trucks and lincoln's there are more of a middle head not the best but not the worse.I found this http://www.reincarnation-automotive....ge-linked.html I'm not a engine builder so i can't say for sure but i would buy some alum heads it will cut down some weight.Look at rpmmachine.com they have some nice stroker kits for it.

Come on there, looking at your signature, your pockets are deeper than 95% on those here on this site. Your goals should be a cake walk for this mill.

My pockets aren't that deep, I just spend pretty much every penny I got on Mustangs. The Roush and truck I pay monthly on and the '69, '73, and '89 are all complete projects that I've acquired over the last few years.

I really want my projects to come out right, thats why I'm asking alot of questions.

So anyways how would you guys build this 429? All suggestions are appreciated. I just want to do it right the first time, within budget.

Thanks,
Ryan

It's been a while since I looked at building a big block but 500 horsepower and 500 ft/lbs should be very easy to do on a budget. If you can find a set of D0VE-C heads that will help a lot. They are/were the **** as far as stock iron heads go.

Jusk kidding...but I wouldn't want your payments.
If your budget allows for aluminum heads and a good cam, no problem getting 500 hp/trq. But then the snowball effect kicks in when stuff starts breaking.

Check out FordFe.com: http://www.network54.com/Forum/74182/

they are a forum that specializes in the FE engines, like yours. I have a 390 in my '67 and have gotten a lot of advise from them.

429's and 460's are 385 series engines, not FE's. FE's are 360, 390, 427, and 428's.
