67 convert speaker location
Any of you guys with 67-68 verts (or 64-66 for that matter) come up with a good speaker combination without cutting up the doors?
I know about the kick panels and I was thinking of going with the biggest ones NPD sells. If those are not the best....should I order the blank ones and install my own speakers? If so what would you recommend?
For the dash speaker....what do you think of the dual unit sold by NPD? Was thinking of that, if not so good then what are y'all runn'in?
Anything I can put in the rear? Maybe boxes in the trunk???
I like it loud (not ghetto bass but rock/metal) and would like some decent output with the top down "if possible".
I have an original 8-track in the dash but I'm wiring it to where I can add a disc changer in the back or something. Maybe put an in dash type unit in the glove box or something?
I want my 8-track to work but be able to switch over to the modern unit when desired.
Anyway....what are y'all using?

order blank ones and install your own speakers you will have to be careful as there is not a lot of depth, you can cut and install some 4x6 or 5x7's in the rear 1/4 panels but they dont sound very good, I did the kick panels and I found some 6x9 angled enclosures I put on the floor right behind the rear seats, I also added a cheap amp and 2 12" subs in the trunk, I'm not into ghetto bass either but this combo sounds great with the top down unless on the fwy then the bass goes away. It doesent thump or rattle the lic plate it just sounds like a nice stereo with the top down, I will tell you the 8 track isnt woth a crap for sound so install another unit in the glove box if you want to keep the am/8track. my vert http://htwheelz.smugmug.com

I'm listening...I've been thinking about this lately too.
I was thinking of the kick panels, but recently on another thread someone mentioned that when you are driving you can barely hear those speakers. I don't want to cut up my doors either. What about in the rear quarter trim? The power top cylinders would probably be in the way, but if not you could probably put pretty big speakers in there.

Htwheelz67: My Lord I love your pony! What color is that by the way? I was going to go with something similar, a very dark, deep metallic red. Like a burgundy sort of or a blood color but metallic base coat clear coat affair like newer vehicles. What speakers are you using? I think I will follow your lead in this cause yours does look clean and close to stock'ish. I'm still debating on a 351W but if I do I might as well go all the way and modify (improve) the sound system too.
Jhpstang: Figured you were Are you to this point yet? Have you made a selection on what you are going to use?
2+2GT: Are those the ones offered by NPD? You know...someone hacked up my quarter trim panels in that exact area for this. I was going to fix them with a sheet of plastic then reinforce the entire backside with fiberglass since the plastic seems kinda flimsy. I really would hate to reinstall here but it is just about the only other option for a permanent mount. I like Wheelz's boxes behind the seats. Thats great for 2 person driving which most likely will be the norm. Guess I could reinstall the quarter trim speakers...did you do this and if so do you have any pics of the finished job?

See, that is what I thought. Do you mean depth'wise by this? It looks like the former owner had a pair of round 5" back there. That doesn't seem like it would offer a significant amount of sound.

Thanks for the compliments ez feed, the color is a GM cadillac color from the late 80's, I still have the color code somwhere, I used sony xplod speakers in the kick panels and they fit great and sound good, if you are intersted I have some boxes with nice speakers I was going to post for sale. I bought my 1st mustang at 13 yrs old in 1974 and have been working on them since, I got the vert in 82. If you want more info tips on the resto you are doing PM me, I would be glad to share my experiences with you.
