converting to electric fan ...
Hi all,
money and time is tight so I'm just giving this a thought at the moment.
I want to convert the fan to an electric one at some stage. But instead of ordering from states I'd rather search the local junkyards. I'm quite sure I can find something fitting.
However there's the question on what I should be looking for.
Should I get a fan that shrouds the whole area of radiator or will it be ok if it just covers the core? I probably won't get a dual fan in there unless I attempt what (i think it was andrew?) did. So is there some information I could get on the cfm ratings of what is installed. Are there any giveaways?

Scootchu has a good point. The fan itself is the easy part, while the controller may be the problem. There are many fans out there on the aftermarket with built in controllers. Perhaps you could put off this purchase (since the belt driven one works great) until you can save up enough to do it 'right'?

I have the taurus fan in my 68 mustang, i had to trim the shround a bit but was no problem. I paid 30 bucks for the fan, 17 bucks for the fan switch, and 22 for the relay. The other upgrade you will have to do is an alternator. So for about 150 for total cost of upgrade. But my car now has an adjustable thermostat and runs at 160 on a 100 degree day.
Here is the link for the adjustable thermo: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/cat...&parentId=63-0
relay: http://www.pcsconnectors.com/V23232-A0001-X003.aspx

I believe on Fordmuscle.com they have a write up on doing a conversion with a taurus fan. Just look at the main page where they have all their tech write ups people submit, and I'm sure there are more in the archives as usually there's only 9 main tech write ups displayed on the 1st page. The archives have the rest.

If you can fit the Taurus fan in, it works great. It will suck small animals through the grill! My car cools so well the air blowing out of the fan on the passenger side is hot but by the time you get to the center of the radiator, it's blowing cool air. I have never had the motor above 195 or so on a 95-degree day in crawling, clutch-riding, first-gear traffic (in Branson, MO). The fan pull about 30 amps though. Definitely upgrade the alternator.

The Taurus with the 3.0L has a dual fan, that wont fit.
You need the single fan out of a 3.8L.
I got one fan from a dual fan Taurus and made a shroud.
If you are into electronics you cam make a fan controller real easy.
That's what I did using the stock ECT sender, a small circuit, and 2 relays.
