Default Car won't start (sometimes)

A few weeks ago, I was driving around and stopped to get gas. Filled up and tried to start but nothing happened. I did hear the starter solenoid click, but nothing turned over. I figured it was the starter solenoid. I go out and jumped it with a screwdriver and wrench and that worked no problem. I have since replaced the starter solenoid. However, this morning it would not start, again. I managed to jump the solenoid again but it took several tries; I would jump the two terminals, and an electrical spark would appear but nothing happened. I tried a few times then it suddenly worked and started fine.

Ideas? Grounds should all be good. It's an automatic, I made sure it was in park, but maybe the neutral safety switch is acting up? Maybe the starter is going? (it is old, maybe original)
Battery charge has always been good.

Yea, I'd put it up for sale on Craigslist a few times but there were no takers. I'm possibly getting a better position at my job (more money) and more hours (more money) so I might actually be able to do more than replace things when they break.

Do you have headers? Your starter could be heat soaked.

No headers. This morning when I tried to start it, the car had been sitting all night.

Since you are hearing the solenoid click your neutral switch is OK as it is between the ignition switch and the solenoid in the circuit. My thought would be a dead spot in your starter where shorting the solenoid could be kicking it enough into a position where it will spin. Probably time for a new starter, less than $75 I would think, and pretty easy to change.

BTW...KEEP THE 66!!

if you were going to put a new starter in i would recommend a hi torque mini starter. Can get them for 55 bucks shipped from db electrical.

Maybe want to check that the starter power cable didn't rest on any exhaust parts and burn?

67t5ponycoupe: Yeah it is pretty weird. But please do not credit that look of this car to me, this picture is what I started with. Check out my website for the whole story - savethe66.com
