3.55 or 3.80 with Performer RPM Cam
#2
Depends. What are your primary plans to do with the car? If you are building any kind of a track car, then go with the 3.80's. If you are just building a cruiser, and particularly one you will take on longer trips, go with the 3.55's.

Well, that is what I always read regarding gear selection (performance vs gas mileage) and that is not exactly my question.
The car (not mine but close) is using a Performer RPM setup and needs new gear. It is currently running 3.55 but since there is no power until 2k RPM , I was wondering if switching to 3.80 would help my buddy. It works fine today, the question is, would it be better??

I would go with the 3.80s. I was in the same boat some time ago and I went with the 3.80s...Im glad I did. Sometimes I wish I would have put 4.11s in it but never 3.55s, not once not even on the freeway

I got the summit brand They are pretty quite. They howl just a bit in coast I think that has more to do with the installation maybe.... either way I dont find them annoying by any means and I think it was like a 120 bucks for them.
Which t5 do you have? Do you have the .63 Over Drive?

If a new gear set is installed right, you shouldn't get any noise from them. I emphasize NEW gear set because it's almost impossible to setup a used set of gears in on a new carrier and not get any noise.

i have 3.73s with a 289 and T5. I drive the car a lot on the street and kind of wish that i had 3.55s. i have to shift so fast that it kind of gets annoying. However, I love the juice when i hammer it. It is a trade off. I think it is mostly important how you will be driving it.

Thanks for the replies.
My question was more related to the cam that is used here, the Performer RPM is rev happy and does not provide tons of low-end power hence I assume that 3.80 would potentially be better. Is that the correct way of thinking?
