Default Can a tach be connected to a 170 CI. engine?

I was wondering if a tachometer can be installed in my early 65 with a 170 CI. I-6 engine. If so can someone tell where it connects. Thanks.

Why yes it can.

Youll need one for a 6 cyl

all it needs is 12v power and a pulse. If I recall you can pick up a usable pulse from the coil. I run mine off my MSD A6 box not the coil in my case.

The repro Rally Pac comes in a 6 cylinder version, just as the original did.

The pulse as Gun Jam calls it, comes from the negative side of the coil.

Only on aftermarket tachs. The factory tachs used current draw at the ignition switch end of the resistor, which is the plus side of the coil, of course.

Default Thanks for the great answers

Thanks for the answers.

The reason I originally asked this is that I used to have an old car that used a cable driven tach, I believe it was directly off of the crankshaft. I thought all of the old cars with tachs used this method so I was trying to figure out where you connect it.

After doing some reading about it, I feel like it was a stupid question. Apparently the electronic version is the most common and can be used on any engine.

Cable driven tachs were usually run off a gear on the shaft of a special distributor. VERY old school now days.

ya, but keep in mind what 2+2 said:
there's the original factory tachs which work the same as the rally pac. they are inline tachs as the tach is just shoved between ignition switch and resistor wire. it picks up on voltage changes around the 12V+
This will only work if you don't use HEI systems like MSD and Mallory etc. pertronix conversion is ok.

then there's the aftermarket tachs, which you can get in 4/6/8 cylinder or switchable. They are connected to coil- and battery+. you can use them with about any setup.
but that said, a Rally Pac does look nice but they're crap expensive

I'm Old School and consider it a badge of honor.

I wonder how many posters here are old enough to remember the evening in April of 1964 when every TV channel had a long running commercial announcing the new Mustang? I'm guilty, I was almost fifteen! Anyone else?
