Default Can you stroke a 1965 289?

Hey guys,

Can I stroke my 65 289 to a 331 or 347? I am looking at all possibilities here, including cam and heads. This is a street racer with 3.73 gears and a 4speed. I curently am running a holly 650 and would like to be able to run it on the stroker but if I have to move up to a bigger carb I will. Will have a 5 speed at some point. I hear different opinions on stroking the 289 just need to gather more information on doing that. It would be easier for me if it could be done. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I agree. A roller block will be a little more expensive, but there's a lot more streetable power potential in a roller cam.

That 650 is likely way too big for your 289, but it should work on a stroker.

That's exactly what I did with mine, I wanted to keep the stock block as most cars at my local shows/cruises have been swapped out to a later model 302 and EFI. I like the fact that I'm still running the stock block and a carb, makes me one of the few in my area to still do so. My block was already .030" over so we had to go .040" with the stroker kit and I ended up at 333ci.

My car was built as a DD with track fun in mind, I'm going from C4 to AOD and have installed a 9" 3.50. I chose to stay conservative as I want a lot of miles out of this car and no oil burning so I went 331, it's not that big a step in rod angle from the stock stroke like the 347. With the 331 crank/rods my cylinder skirts didn't even need to be notched, with a 347 they would have to be as the rod angle is greater which also = greater side load on the cylinder/piston/rod. The shop built my shortblock, install my supplied AFR heads, Weiand highrise intake (port matched to heads) and set it all up ready to start for $2600, rebuild kit included (KB pistons, Scat crank, etc).

I'm getting ready to install and am getting ancy to hear this beast run. I stayed conservative with the cam also going with the CC XE262 as I'll have PB and AC, this was the tallest flat tappet cam before the vacuum dropped off and is right at .500" lift. I'm guessing in the 400hp range on the motor, will be a nice kick from the last time I drove it down the 1/8mi. with the stock 200hp. I'm using a 625cc Demon Jr. I'd try your 650 with the stroker before buying a bigger carb., you can do some adjusting with different jet sizes.

I looked at converting my 289 to a roller cam ($1,000+ in parts) and didn't feel the 15hp difference was worth it, hard to find any clear exact hp difference in the 2 so 15 is a guess from desktop dynos I've played with. With a roller block to start you can run a taller cam but again the difference wasn't huge to me for the investment or the fact that I'd be loosing my original 289 and becoming one of the crowd. It's a personal choice so good luck with your decision but yes the option to stroke your 289 is available, just need to decide how agressive you want to go.

Anybody run dynos to see the hp/tq difference between 331 and 347 with the same combo?

Here's a pic of my 'sleeper' 333, I painted the alum. int. and heads to match the block to make it all look more stockish. The int. and heads were used so they weren't pretty anyway:

Let me know if you have any questions I can answer,
Jon

Jon,

I really appreciate all the information you gave me, that really helps! I am anxious to here how well your new motor runs compared to the old set up on the 289. To go roller, or not to go roller, that is the question. My view on the roller set up was that the engine runs quieter. And doesn't your cam idle better with a roller set up? Keep us posted on how that engine works for you!
