Default New Fuel Tank Install

Evidently this is a really stupid quaestion, as I could not find the exact info I was looking for in either the FAQ or by searching the forum. I am installing a new fuel tank in my wife's 68 Mustang. I have a shop manual, a haynes manual, and coincidentally recently received a Mustang Monthly where they install a larger than stock fuel tank. The shop manual mentions using a sealant between the tank and the trunk, but no sealant is mentioned in the instructions in the Hayne's manual or in the Mustang Monthly article. Do I need to use a sealant? What kind? And, how should I apply it, specifically? (e.g. thin bead on the edges of the trunk floor then place tank in trunk, or thick bead, etc.) Thanks for any help and experience you can pass along. I've never done this before, and I want to make sure I do it absolutely right. I do have all new parts including gaskets, filler hose, screws, etc.

NPD sells what your looking for as do likely Napa, etc. The NPD product is called 3M Strip-Calk. You open the box and there are a few layers and you simply peal off a strip, lay it down and get another strip and continue all around the opening in the trunk. Make sure you loop the strips around each 'BOLT' hole in trunk. I put down 2 strips all the way around myself for the extra protection. I also say bolt as I prefer them over screws.

Checkout NPDs online catalog page 245 part# 903-1. I've seen it at other automotive shops in a box as well as in a roll and in various widths.

Don't use a 'sealant' for this...

I used that 3M strip caulk as well. Easy. Simple. Screws/bolts go right through it. No worries, have at it.

A trick with the strip caulk, put a ball of it in a socket to hold a bolt in the socket. Almost like a third hand at times.

Thanks, sounds exactly like what the shop manual called "caulking cord".

Hopefully you don't mind me asking a question since it seems you got your answer. Is this Mustang Monthly article online? Which larger fuel tank do they recommend? I just pulled the tank from my 67 FB and would consider a larger one if it fits without any problems.

The larger tank swap uses a 1970 Mustang tank. I believe you need the sending unit and have to modify the filler neck.
