Rebuild Tips? - Freshen up performance
Over the summer I'm rebuilding a 65 coupe with my dad (has a 289 2V engine with a 3 speed trans). It's been sitting for a number of years, so the engine is going to need a full going through. Before we get into the project though, I'm trying to source/choose parts to freshen up the car a bit from stock.
So far I'm looking at putting in a cam and cleaning up the exhaust ports along with the overall rebuild. In the future, I'd also like to change it to a 4 barrel carb and add either headers or hipo exhaust manifolds - but for now I'm focusing on the basic rebuild.
The car is going to be more oriented for the street, so we'd prefer to keep from going too aggressive on the cam.
Any opinions on how something like this would work matched with the port cleanup? (power gains, streetability, build quality/longevity, other suggestions)

Any tips on touching up the exhaust ports to get the engine flowing better?
Any other opinions on things that would do well to upgrade during the rebuild would be much appreciated too.
Thanks.

i would look into one of the summit kits. they assemble kits which include cam, lifters, intake manifold, carb, and gaskets for some really good prices. They dont always list the top end kits on their site so you may need to call them. this is what i did and i am glad i did.
I would deffinatly install a set of headers while your at it. I would also intall a double roller timing chain and a high flow oil pump. this way if you add onto it in the future you will be covered.
also intalling an upgraded distributor will help. that way you can get rid of the points.

If you are keeping the stock heads, definately have your maching shop install screw in rocker studs as the original press in type has a tendancy to back out, causing coolant to leak into the motor... not good.
If you have the rail type rocker arms, I would also switch them out to either the stamped type or roller rockers. Remember, if you do this, you will need shorter vavles.
there is plenty room to open up the ports and any competent machine shop can do the work, though you'd probably spend enough to buy new heads.
I'd say with a mild cam, 4 bbl, headers and a pertronix, you could spend about 500 bucks. The next thing I would do would be to swap in either a 4 or 5 speed trans (or a 6 speed, but that gets pricey).

We actually do have a 4 speed toploader that my dad wants to put in after we get it running - so that's the next project.
On the build now though, I'm trying to keep it fairly basic updates and budgeted - then I'll go and do things like new performance heads and the like when I save up the money for it/after the car is running solid.
So it sounds like the pertronix ignitor is a good choice to upgrade to . A cam is also worth it at the moment because we're tearing everything down - might as well put that in now rather than have to pull it apart again later. I'll take a look/call to see what sort of top end kits summit has to see if there's anything that'll work for me - thanks.
Regarding a cam though - any suggestions? - I'm hoping to be able to pep the car up a bit (I'm just not so knowledgeable on how much of a change different cams will have mixed with a little better flow in the heads).

Could always convert it over to a roller cam. Give Comp Cams a call and they'll be able to set you up easily. The conversion requires 2 small holes drilled and then tapped in the upper valley.. thats it. Pickup a cheap 5.00 depth ring for the drill bit and a tap&die set which any garage should have anyways. I've always been surprised that more people don't do this upgrade as it really doesn't cost much. The guys at Comp Cams are friendly and extremely knowledgeable.
If your going to rebuild the Toploader and need a rebuild kit checkout Toploader Heaven . com. I bought our rebuild kit from him and you could ask for a better instruction set or complete kit.
