Default Finding out rear end ratio

im curious as to what gears are in the mustang. I know it is a posi because I did a burnout with two solid stripes, but i'm puzzled. here's the issue...

to find out the gear ratio for posi you lift the rear, put it in nuetral, and spin one revolution of the tire while counting the driveshaft spins to find out what you have. (let me know if this is right)

The problem is that when I do this, I come up with 1.5 turns of the driveshaft for 1 turn of the tire. this can't be correct. I don't think i have 1.5 gears.

Something interesting. when I turn the tire, the other does not spin at all. All of my other posi rears turn both at the same time. This one is weird. the brakes are free and nothing is holding it from spinning.

Any help appreciated.

I would mark both the tire and driveshaft with some chalk before counting. That ratio seems strange to me as well. Also, I have no idea what type of LSD you're using. Different types will turn at different speeds and/or times depending on the bias, internal design, and torque running through it.

BTW, if I may point out one more thing. The term 'posi' (short for 'posi-traction') is actually a GM term for a LSD (limited slip differential); just like Ford uses the term 'Traction-Lok'. It's not a big deal, I just thought you won't want someone to think you have a GM part on your Ford.

Assuming that the opposite wheel did not move, 1.5 turns means you have a 3 to 1 ratio.

The reason is that the differential (even on MOST "limited slip differentials) will be in play causing the motion to be doubled on the moving wheel in relation to the yoke, since you are turning the wheel, the yoke only covers half the distance it otherwise would if Both the wheels were turning equally in the same direction.

Turning the wheel 10 times and counting the yoke rotations divided by 5 will give you a better number.

I think anyway, I have had a few margaritas already so check my math.....

Thanks. I was thinking today about it and wondered if it could be a 3.00 because its the only logical gear i could come up with based on the 1.5. The links cleared everything up as well.

bets way is to put a string on the bottom of the driveshaft and then push the car forward, or backwards, one complete revolution of the tires, then see how many times the string wraps around the driveshaft, 3 times = 300.
