sloppy steering even at stop?

There is an internal nut for preloading the spool, you need to check the Service Manual for details. Wouldn't hurt to do the gearbox, either.

Sure, it COULD be the steering box, but it also could be tie rod ends, pitman arm, even wheel bearings loose, and don't forget the rag joint.
