Default 289 with GT40P heads

hey guys im from the 5.0 section and i have some questions. my brother has a 65 coupe with a 289 in it but the car is trash. my fox is with out engine right now and im really itching to get it back on the road. i know the engine will drop right in and mate up to my t5 but my main question is do i need to do anything to put gt40p heads on it and also what kind of compression would i be running with these heads? im only putting the engine in my fox to be able to drive it again since it has been sitting for 2 years. once im done building my 347 the 289 with find another classic to go in.

You need headers that fit that head, the P's used an oddball spark plug angle that require special headers.

You just need the special headers, and here is a good article on figuring compression. Heads or head gaskets do not account for much.

other than the headers i dont need anything like special head bolts? i know when putting old windsor heads on a newer 302 you need special head bolts.

You do need special head bolts, readily available from ARP.

What year is the 5.0? After '85, 5.0's use roller cams which require a steel distributor gear. That steel gear will shred your cam drive gear. That said, a cast iron gear is fairly easy to swap in.

its out of an 84 flat tappet cam. i know what the difference between the gears and the cams but all the dizzies i have looked at online are for just 289's or just 302's so i just wanted to make sure before trying to put the one from the 302 into the 289

Same thing Gear composition is the only varying factor.

Yeah, 289 block is the same as a 302 block. Aside from casting numbers, most people can't tell the difference. Though I think there is a coolant hole difference between the block and heads? Someone else may know more about that.
