Question 65 conv: Hazard flasher short & other strange wires

I have a 65 with possibly a factory-installed flasher. I say possibly because the wires are riveted to the back of the switch but the bracket that mounts the flasher on the switch is missing. I found mine when looking under the dash & followed the odd-looking harness over to the glove box. The switch & flasher were just sitting on top of the box. No hole in the box--might have been replaced by PO.

Now a problem--which may explain why it was hidden. There was power to the switch but when I turned it on it blew the fuse. There's a short somewhere because the flasher is interrupting power to a dead short. It "cycles" a couple times til the fuse pops. The courtesy lights dim due to the short but the exterior lights do not flash.

In a harness that merely taps into existing wires--which work fine--how do I find the short?

Does your brake lights and signals work? It maybe could be in the column. You will need to start tracing the wire and it may be a long process.

Sounds like the early 66 flasher, which was added on to the wiring at the turn signal connector.

Try disconnecting it altogether, at the TS connection. Once you know the wiring in the car is OK, you can examine the flasher. The switch is available new, and comes with the bracket.

As I said--my lights work fine. In this detail of the hazard switch wiring I see the option is a "T"-harness that inserts in the turn signal connection. Since my lights all work there must be a short in the branch wires or the flasher itself. In my car the branch wiring extends all the way from the column over to the glovebox & it's not well secured. A wire may have been cut by the ashtray, radio bracket, or maybe the insulation has cracked & the wires are shorting to ground. Looks to me if the wires were shorted to each other then that indicator light would always flash--but wouldn't be a short that would blow the lighter fuse.

Default 1965 Mustang Emergency Flasher & Switch.

Hope this reply helps other members on this question. Six Pictures. The photos uploaded are for the 1965 mustang original Emergency Flasher & Switch which mounts on left side of lower dash in the “D” hole. The orange with yellow stripe wire which is spliced to a faded blue with white stripe wire is used to connect to the cigar lighter hot wire, which is the Blue with White stripe wire main harness. The flasher unit is number 536 and is used for this application while the turn signal flasher is number 552. This setup is in my 1965 fastback with a scheduled build date of October 13th 1964. There is only one "D" hole stamped into my lower leftside dash instead of two because of the early production date. Later production cars had the two "D" holes at that location. The Emergency Flasher was an option for the 1965 year. In 1966 the feds stepped in mandating it as standard equipment so the location was in the glove box. Hope these pics help out and feel free to ask questions.
