Default Machine shop's closed 'til Monday, so...

I thought I'd ask here.

We're tearing down what appears to be the original block (condition of the engine unknown, retreived in pieces from a trailer park carport)

We found the holes in these photos.

Just wondering if this is as bad as it looks... - opinions as to whether it might be usable??

I've searched for photos for comparison, but couldn't really find any that helped. Not much experience with the 289 - yet.

Any thoughts appreciated,

Todd

My non professional opinion.... Shredded... My real question is why start with a block like this go scrapping yup can find a much betterbstarting point then shredded.... I am gonna go as far and say that is unusable.... "The holes don't need to be there I am sure of it" (Brian Reagan tone)

Default Thanks

It's the block that came (sort of) with the car. Had no idea what kind of condition it was in. We;kk start hunting for another block.

Will put the photos in the post next time.

So much to learn, so little time

pretty sure the hole in the galley is supposed to be there. at least I have two blocks with it, one's a 67 289 and one's a 70 302. the giant one exposing the cam, not so much.

Default Hole in the galley

I've found some pictures showing the galley hole - the odd thing here is the chipping aroung the edges - not the clean casting as most photos show.

The bottom hole looks like something on the cam or the distributor let go - probably the cam, the distributor wouldn't have enough mass to do that kind of damage.....

If you want the photos to show throw them on photo bucket... Or if you facebook them I can repost them again...

I still maintain you could find a block without the giant cam hole...

the galley hole looks just like my blocks. i'm pretty sure that was knocked out after the block was cast. there is an indentation on the timing chain side to indicate the location and size of the hole that I'm guessing Ford used to knock it out.

but yeah that block is trash. make a table out of it

Default 289 block casting

So, I took the block to the machine shop this morning. At first glance, the machinist wasn't happy, but we went and looked at 5 or 6 other blocks - they all have the same rough spot at the top of the hole (see pics below)

Best guess is that it may have been a flashing breakaway from the original casting... not sure. The top (oil galley) hole is smooth in 3 of the other blocks, but chipped in a couple. It's not in a pressure area, and doesn't appear to affect the cam or the distributor - so, we're moving ahead.

They're getting started with inspection and measurements - we'll see what we've got in a few days.

Thanks for all your feedback,

Todd

This is actually pretty normal.

The same holes appear on this 289 featured in a Mustang Monthly article Ford 289 Short-Block Buildup Part 1.
