Default Trans shift lever rubs...

The shift lever on my 65 rubs the hump; is this normal? I thought it might have been installed backwards, so I tried to swap it; would not even come close to fitting. The car originally came with a 289, but was told the new motor is a 302. I believe the transmission to be a C4.

What shape are the shifter bushings in??? I have a set, but cannot get the shifter nut loose to install them. Moves around like it's a standard tranny.

I should have been more clear... It's the shift linkage that is rubbing. The bushing on the forward end of the linkage is good. However, it is kinda hard to shift into gear because the linkage rubs.
