jeez guys...i go away a couple of months and everyone sticks their heads in the sand
the whole idea of a filter is for it to stop your radiator blocking...so therefore if its catching crap before it gets to your rad, then the filter "blocking" means its doing its job. Yes you need to clean it. THats just another maintenance item same as checking the oil and water on these old girls regularly.
most of us run cast iron engine blocks that are 20+ years old with a history of poor use of tap water and the odd clean out or change of coolant. They get scale and mud and crap over time. THe reason OEM dont use them is because they dont have to. they start with a clean cooling system.
when you use a filter (especially after a rebuild) for the first month or 2 you wont believe how much gunk ends up in it. Same crap that would have ended up in your radiator. once everything settles down, then you find the filter only needs cleaning out every so often.
There are sock filters you can fit inside the top hose but you do spill a little coolant in checking them and you obviously have to remove the hose to check the filter. the inline types like JamesW is what i use...easy simple reliable and saves you $$ on radiators and overheating headaches.
I havent come across anyone yet who hasnt got a good result with one. The pic is after reinstalling the mustang engine but neglecting to clean out the heater core which (while less than 2 years old) had been sitting for 6 months. 3 weeks later, the filter is pretty much clean.

Conditioning coolant filter installed
Coolant filter w/ 1 oz DCA installed in 66 truck and is working well.
I installed filter bypass valve also.
I used $40 saved from not changing fluid to purchase filter setup.
Have 1/4" x 4" aluminum bracket designed for mustang.
Haven't had time to locate 1/4" aluminum flat bar stock locally.
Plan to leave filter on truck and mount filter on mustang temporarily.

coolant filter update
I serviced and flushed 8 gallon 66 truck coolant system in 2008.
Installed 30 micron coolant filter Nov 2010.
Filter already plugged once and I removed and back flushed crud from filter.
I can tell when filter is plugged because it gets cold.
I feel better knowing I am trapping the solids w/o having to flush system w/ tap water.
I believe experience I have gained from installing filter on truck will help me fine tune technique for mustang coolant system maintenance.

DIY coolant filter 67 mustang installed
Crazy or not, coolant filter is installed on 67 mustang under battery tray.
Drilled no holes.
Easy to install.
Found parts cheap on ebay.
Installed coolant recovery tank as well.

Didn't need bypass valve on 67.
I installed coolant filter bypass valve on 67 mustang.
My heater works fine at 32F w/ bypass valve closed.
66 GMC heater not hot as 67 mustang and coolant filter bypass valve is useful on 66 GMC. That truck really likes to run cool. It's a high torque 305 big block V6 w/ huge coolant capacity and radiator.
