With respect to the AOD, the only critical things I can remember is giving the throttle valve cable absolute priority over whatever space it needs to have to work without binding or being interfered with, and getting it properly adjusted. This will almost certainly exclude certain header models from consideration, and will quite possibly force a certain amount of custom exhaust work in that region.

An AOD out of some mid-1980's Mercury fit into a 1966 coupe with zero tranny tunnel mods, though a little crossmember reworking and I think some P-brake tweaking ended up being necessary. If DIY crossmember fab/modification is above your capabilities, I think there is a ready-made unit.

The ready made cross member is not expensive

Flipping the shifter is a peace of cake too. Although if you go to a shifter that uses a cable like a b&m you dont have to flip the lever. Making a shift linkage for the stock shifter is a pain in the butt though.

The TV cable when installed needs to have all the slack out of the cable. There needs to be tv pressure as soon as you touch the throttle or you will fry your AOD in no time. Its easy to set up but you just need to make sure you do it right.

When I installed my lokar TV cable and the way it routes it doesnt come anywhere near where it would interfere with headers

The Throttle valve pressure must be AT LEAST 5 psi at hot idle and it must increase at least as fast as the throttle does. Failure to get the adjustment and travel right the first time will likely destroy the transmission before you get a second chance.

Odd, but I don't remember that part of the conversion as being difficult at all. Best I can remember, all I did was tweak the link the came with the car to fit up to the AOD and give the right amount of movement (though I don't remember exactly what I needed to do). If it had been a PITA, I'd have remembered that much for sure.
