I'm impartial to the 67 myself.

According to the numbers there were about 30,000 more fastbacks made in 67 than there were in 68.

Another subtle difference is in the GT 500's hoods and fog lights for both years. I like the small mild hood slits mid hood (as in the 67) compared to the hood slits in the 68 more close to the front. The early 67 GT 500's had the large fog lights placed in the center. This option is highly sought after now a days. The placement of the lights were moved to the out side of the grille mid way through the 67 year because of safety issues or something. That's if you're going the Shelby clone route. I myself have been toying with doing this for the last five years to my car.

Like a previous poster here, I've driven my car from North Carolina to Massachusettes and back a few times. Driven through New York city and have never seen a GT500 clone on the road. I go to old car, Ford etc car shows and usually there are only 1 or 2 fastbacks on the field.

My friend took a 68 fastback and turned it into the Elenor. I don't like the body kit myself, but I must say that it is beautiful and a lot of people can relate to what it is. I don't know how many would recognize a KR-500 at a red light other than maybe that it looks similar to a new Shelby.

Final verdict? I say shop around for a 1967 fastback.

There is not alot of difference in the outside appearance that couldn't be easily changed..There is quite a bit on the inside though..The 68 had alot of things changed in the interest of better safety..Shoulder belts, locking seat backs, steering column seperate from the steering box, windshield mounted rear view mirror and different door handles and padded console to mention a few..

Thanks for all your suggestions. Now if I could just become a little bit more mechanical so when the time comes, I'll be ready.

Thats part of the fun. I dove in head first five years ago after one of my many tours to Iraq. With the help of friends, Mustang Magizine and this web site, I've learned enough to keep my car running smoothly.

If you can figure out what is broken, how to take it off and how to put a new one on, then you'll have no problems. The big stuff, like welding, painting and engine rebuilding, I'll continue to leave for the experts.
