Cheap too. But it can be very confusing to someone just starting out. 28 or 50? 157 or 164?

wow you guys are awesome. i was alittle worried that this thread was going to get me flamed. im used to some other forums that would flame the crap out of someone for asking a question that was not the most technical question. i will have to read up on flywheels then. seems like this wont be to bad of a swap.

An original 65 289 would have had a 157 whether it was auto or manual. 40 years on, you better check.

Swap is a piece of cake. This site has some good info http://www.rowand.net/shop/tech/ford...flexplates.htm

I will say the following is "likely" but you need to double check what you have for sure.
Like 2+2 says, your 289 has a 157 tooth 28oz imbalance flexplate(flywheel)
Your new 302 has a 164 tooth 50 oz imbalance flexplate(flywheel)
You 302 must also use a 50oz imbalance flywheel regardless of the number of teeth on your flywheel
Your C4 requires a 157 tooth flywheel. I have a couple of C4s here, the one out of a Versalle (351W)uses a 164 but the mustang will be 157.

You need to find a 157 tooth 50oz flywheel, summit racing sells them as do a host of other sites. You may also try the classifieds here or corral.net which is much more active though you won't find many "vintage" mustang parts there. I bought a flex plate for my 1990 302HO (164 tooth 50oz) for $20 from the classified. Not sure how easy it will be to find the 157/50 used.

I'm also fairly new to mustangs, got my 66 in May of 2010 and joined this group right away. Awesome bunch of guys and gals (No Reins), everyone is willing to help. I'm went a little crazy with my resto, completely replacing the suspension to coil over (hornets nest of opinions on this one) putting in a 302HO (shortblock I found) with trickflow heads etc for a mild build up and a 4R70W trans. Welcome to the board!!!

Now don't run away and hide. We need to see some pics of the ride and the progress you're making. Or you can be like me, have the car in the garage sitting in parts and make no progress

well here is an update. i bought the 302. everything looked good. the cylinder walls were in good shape, the crank turned good, it all looked pretty good. so i got it home and found this

where the dip stick goes it looks like he took a 4.5inch angle grinder and started in on the dip stick hole. its hard to see but he ended up hitting a water jacket. you can put a rod into the hole and it will touch the bottom of the oil pan. then you can pull the rod out some, turn in 90degrees and put the rod into a water jacket. i dont know what is going on here. does anyone have any ideas. he ground out about 1/2 inch worth of metal.

****, it looks like my brother in law "worked" on" that engine...

Well you still have your 289 block, you can make one engine out of the two....
