Default Advice needed! First Resto! 1969

Hello everyone! This is my first post on the Mustang Forum. (New Member)

I've recently gotten a 1969 Mustang GT w/ a 390 bored 30 over and a 4 speed transmission. This is my first restoration project and I need some advice. I want to restore this car and still be respectful to the era, yet make it an aggressive ride.

First off, I know nothing about carbureted engines. I'm usually a diesel guy. I've got a buddy that's helping me restore this and he suggested a different cam and a shaker hood set up. I'm at a loss as to what type of carb to put on this engine. From what I gather, Edelbrock and Holley are the best. I'm not sure what CFM or what type to use.

I've already got lined up to 4-link the rear end, change out to a 5 spd G-force tranny, (apparently the tremek can only handle 550 lbs of torque, I'll be over that) 2-core aluminum radiator and dual electronic fan kit.

I need some experts opinions. Help?

WOW!! great car! welcome to the forums. Can you post some pictures? We love pictures here. A lot of people like the shaker hood. Im more partial to the hood scoop like in this picture.

As for your carb. The cfm depends on what kind of power you are going to make. Edelbrocks are good for ease of tunning. A holley double pumper will give you a lot more ways to tune the carb to squeek out a lil more horsepower. You could always have one built to match your setup. I went through a guy named patrick at prosystems carbs. If your making over 550hp youll be into the 850 cfm range.

Did someone put the 390 in it. I know a 69 gt 390 coupe is really rare, but i also think the gt 390 fastback is rare as well. Is it an S code(meaning is their an S in the 5th digit of the vin).

Also holley or edelbrock carb will work i run a edelbrock on my 390. Think stock carb was a 735 cfm but i was running a 750(performer series i think) never did get it dialed in tho still needed to swap jets. I would still ask a shop or someone that sets up carbs tho so they can recomend or set one up for any upgrades you have.

Hey everyone! I apologize it's taken me this long to respond. I'll be posting some pictures of the car before I started taking it apart. I've also gotten A LOT more information on what all I'm looking at doing which I'll post here in the next day or so. I've gotten the Marti Report back and as it turns out, this car isn't as rare as I thought. Good car, but there's over 4,000 GT's and 3,891 with 390's. Like I said, I'll post some pictures of my progress on here. I'm going with an Acapulco Blue with a black metal flake in the clear coat. I'm also powder coating all the chrome trim, black. I'm a little excited. Thanks everyone!

My advice is what I tell everyone that is about to do a bunch of work on a matching number engine. Pull the engine and trans out and mothball it, Buy a crate motor and trans and drive it for 100,000 miles. If someone wants a numbers match 69, you got all the parts and if you sell it you got a crate motor and trans.
On the other hand, A aluminum intake, a stock 428 CJ cam and a 750 carb will really wake that 390 up.
