From PS to MS, need to change the caster?
Hi,
Is there a need to reduce the caster when going from power steering to manual steering? It is hard to steer at low speed and I would enjoy it more if it was a little easier.
Thanks,

Actually, yes. The more cast you have, the more the tire wants to return to center. Which sounds like a good thing. But that also means it takes more energy to move it off center. With PS, you can easily use 5-6* of caster, it improves turn in, and makes for a very stable ride. But without the PS, you'll be musceling that car all around town (or the track). You'll be pretty beat up.
I put manual R&P in my '66 coupe (302/C4). With the stock caster, it was a real bear. I changed it a couple of times to see what I'd like, and finally settled on 2.5*. That seemed to give me the best combination of ease of steering and good stability.
My street/track roadster is also manual steering. I use 3.5* on the street. But I decrease that to 2* for the track.
