Question Distributor for 71 Mach 1

We are having issues putting in a new MSD distributor in our 71 429. We were running a Pro Comp. We went on a run and the car was running fine. We stopped at a town and the car was idling rough. We had hit a lot snow and sleet. The temps were really cold so we thought maybe we had an icing problem as we have a shaker. We were parked for awhile and the car started running a little better after we left. The car wasn't getting much throttle and response. Up the road we pulled in to do another stop and the car wouldn't idle and died on us. When you tried to start it, it would backfire. The group we were with checked the carb and there wasn't any ice. Everything good in the carb. They advanced the timing on the distributor and got the car running again. We decided to head for home. The car was running solid but not great and had more power. We got about 15 miles and we had a small backfire and the engine completely shut down. Somebody came over to help us replace the distributor. We pulled the old one out and it had a broken pin. We put the new MSD in and he brought the number 1 up to top dead center. We made sure to set number 1 to the rotor and that all the wires were in the right place. We can only get the engine to fire at one little spot but it won't keep running. If you turn the distributor everything tightens up for turning over. The timing pointer has a circle hole and then it goes up and has an arrow pointer. We're not sure which one you time from, the hole or the pointer. The engine doesn't have 2000 miles on it and has a true double roller timing chain in it. Does anybody have an ideas on what's going on and which part of the timing pointer do we use, the hole or the pointer. We tried using the pointer.
