maybe ill just clean up the rear, have the 3rd member set up by a shop, and do the rest (install the axles and whatnot) myself...even with the axles though don't i need a shop to press the bearings on and put the seals in?

I would buy your new bearings and take your axles with the bearings to a local shop and have them press off the old ones and press on the new ones. My local shop charged me 1/2 shop rate ~$30 to do this. You won't be able to get them off in your garage, they are one time use press fit. I did cut off the retainer rings first to save time/$ at the shop:

Bearings:

You can install the seals yourself, just be careful when inserting the axles that you don't tear the seals.

Also make sure they leave the retainer ring on when they repress the new bearings:

Again, they are ONE TIME use bearings, once they're pressed on they are ruined when you take them off.

Yes, that's it next to the towel. I cut mostly through it in 2 places with a hacksaw if I remember right, they whacked it with a cold chisel to pry it open/off. I got the instructions from my shop manual, if you don't have one it's a great investment for <$50, very thorough compared to a chiltons, etc. as it's for 1 yr. only. I keep all my notes in it as far as what I've replaced, part#'s, casting #'s, rebuild dates, etc. One stop for info. on the car. They come paper or CD, I like the book so I can keep it in the garage and write in it.
You can have the shop remove them too if you don't want to hassle with it. New ones will be in the box with the bearings. You'll notice in the 2nd pic they're gone, on it's way to the shop with the new bearings/retainers.

thanks Jon you've been a big help. i appreciate it. Im going to call currie this week. ive been looking and they have great performance axle packages that come with everything i need (axle, seals, bearings etc) for around 500. i think im going to go with that, a detroit trutrac and 3.73s. all 31 spline of course, the 28 will never hold. What set up are you running on your rear?

Of course you need a pair of new seals, look up the part # for the year/model the rear came out of.

If you're going back with drums there is a paper gasked between the drum/flange and drum/retainer ring:

Your build is very similar to mine and I've got a sister that lives in Manhattan, if you cut her off in your coupe she'll probably think it's me...

This old post is just what I'm looking for I think. Are the gaskets above what I need for my 69 with 28 spline 9"? My plate is not shaped like the one in post #33.

Has anybody here replaced these gaskets lately?
I just bought the bearings, seals and fat gasket that goes between the axle and the brake backing plate. Still not sure about the thin gasket that goes between the brake backing plate and the axle retainer plate, which is just a simple rectangle with the same 4 hole pattern. My NAPA warehouse didn't have any in stock or even show the right one.

Here's what I learned;
Felpro 55035 works between the axle flange and brake plate and is like a multilayer material, not just paper.
Felpro 4828 actually can come in 2 sizes...large and small bearing and it's a crapshoot as to which one you'll get. I got both so I used the small one and ordered another just hoping it is the small one. It fits between the brake plate and bearing retainer plate. Some just use rtv here but what a pain if you have to remove it anytime soon.
Hope this helps others with this project. The old bearings were probably 46 years old and had 145K miles on them...it was time.
