Default Is a 289 clutch interchangeable with 200?

I'm looking at putting a 4 speed behind my straight 6 200 instead of the c4 it has now. Though my car is a 66 it actually has a 68 drive train, and I've located the correct bell housing, flywheel etc. The only part I need to buy is the clutch disc and pressure plate.

The parts store doesn't list one for a 200, but does list one for a 289. Its a 10 inch with 1-1/16 inch 10 spline input. Will this work with my 200?

Thanks Guys,
Scott

I don't think so, I'm pretty sure the 200 takes a 9 inch clutch. The parts stores are getting worse and worse about carrying the correct parts or even having the correct listing for the old mustangs. Your clutch is a problem I have heard of before and the correct fuel filter for the 2100 carb is another one. You might go to the CJ pony site I'm pretty sure they list the clutch for the 200. That will get you pointed in the right direction.

yeah the fuel filter thing is weird, the store had the orange nipple thing that goes inside the accelerator pump but didnt have a fuel filter for my 2100....they ordered it without additional cost to me at least.

I'm actually replacing the clutch on my 66 200 now. I ordered the 9" online, however it is for a 1-1/16"dia input shaft, my trans has a 15/16" dia. I found the kit with a 15/16" shaft, however it says it's only an 8-1/2" disc and the bolt pattern is different. Gettin sick of returning ****, let me know if you figured anything out.

Yep, it is all about the disk. if the disk fits the input shaft and the 6 cylinder pressure plate you should be in business. Summit may have some dimensions on their website.

In a pinch, clutch parts can often be mixed and matched, as an example, assuming a 9" pressure plate, and a 15/16 ten spline input shaft.

Measure all the specifics, including your old six disk and pressure plate and probably something can get worked out.

You need a better supplier. The 66 clutch was unique, it was the same 9" pressure plate as 67-70, but had the small spline of the 64-65.

About 30 years ago, I did a similar swap. IIRC, I used a clutch disc from a Pinto, maybe a 2300??? Might be worth looking at.
Pretty sure I used the stock pressure plate for a '68.

The only 15/16 10T disc I can find is an 8.5". I've checked manufacturers catalogs also. Is there somewhere outhere?

Would it be insane to put an 8.5 on there? I called a trans shop and the guy said it's not that drastic of a change, and it's not a high performance situation.

I'm only looking to make it until winter and then put the time in a get a different trans.

The 67-70 9" disc fits the larger 3.03 3-speed trans, which means it is compatible with V8 transmissions, such as the T5. There is also a disc for the 64-65 8.5" with that larger spline. This means you can put a T5 5-speed in any 6 cylinder Mustang. I have seen these conversions at Glazier/Nolan.

I have the 2.77 HED, I just left a message with Glazier/Nolan to see if the 9" disc they have has the 15/16, since they have it listed as one for a 2.77

As for a T5, are there specific years to aim for? Any drawbacks to certain years?
