if you have an air compressor then take the fuel line off behind the pump and blow it out, dont forget to remove the gas cap.

how bout removing the rubber on the line from the line to the tank. so when you blow it, if anything is in the line it wont go back in the tank?

Default Carburettor Set Up

I have a 1966 Mustang 289

Does anyone know whether the choke plate should be vertical or horizontal when the engine is warm and the car is running. Mine is in the horizontal position when warm but my car is running ok when I'm accelerating but if I ease off the accelerator it is jerking.Trying to hold it at a constant speed it won't run smoothly but when I'm accelerating its fine. I've tried adjusting the choke plate when the car is stationary but when I throttle it up by hand the plate instantly goes back from vertical to horizontal position.

I think it might be something to do with the automatic choke but don't know how it works can anyone help.

Got out on the car yesterday and worked out this some.

cleaned out the front of the carb and tweaked mixture a bit.
I think that helped a lot.

Also tried running hose from some of the extra holes on the side and that did not appear to make a difference for good or bad.

After cleaning it out, I was able to go up the road. One problem I have still is, if you really pop the pedal hard. The engine sounds like it wants to cut off for a second.

I think I may pick up a new carb later anyway but I don't understand why it wants to cut off when you really hit the pedal hard. Works find if you work up to high acceleration.

That sounds like something's not right in the accelerator pump circuit, which could be anything from a bad linkage adjustment to a missing check ball or a ruptured diaphragm inside.

If you work the carb by hand (with the air cleaner off), do you see two nice streams of gas squirting out into the primaries? Or is it only a dribble (or nothing at all that you can see)?

My guess is that the power valve is OK, otherwise it might not even like gently increasing the rpms under load.

I agree its probably the accelerator pump circuit, check to see if the linkage is doing its thing cause you can put the carb together and not get the linkage right, then no squirt.

please start a new thread for this, what your doing is known as thread hijacking.
to answer your question though it should be vertical when warm, there is something seriously wrong with your carb if its closed when warm.
