Default What exhaust should I get?

I only have an I6 with a single exhaust, but the sound it makes when accelerating is...less than desirable. Kind of like a grown man giving someone a raspberry. I want a deeper, gutteral sound, even if the HP doesn't warrant it.

Thing is, I don't want it too loud. Just a nice, tender purr that growls when you open it up. Like, you know she's there, but she's on the prowl.
I'm looking at Flowmasters (I'm told this is the novice approach, which fits), but I don't know which to get, or which types there are. Any suggestions would be nice (I'm kind of on a budget).

I have a friend with a straight 6 1963 ranchero and he has a single 2.25 inch flowmaster 40 that almost sounded like a 289. Then i had another buddy with dual glasspacks off of his manifold that souned pretty good too but it was a little annoying.

I have heard the 200 with dual headers and 2" GT exhaust. Sounded like a V8.

When mine was an inline 6 in high school, I had the stock exhaust back to the transverse muffler. I had a Camaro/Firebird stock single in dual out transverese muffler installed, so I could have the look of duals. It was very cool, and wasn't obnixious, just a tad louder than stock. This I think would give you the sound you want.

I like the setup BAMustang has with turbo mufflers.

I also like the idea of a split manifold or header and the 2 inch stock type duals. You don't need anything bigger than that for the 200.

Please say no to the Flow or any of the similar chambered mufflers. Flowmaster sounds like a hollow tin can and sounds even worse on a six cylinder. I have had them of varying sizes on different vehicles over the years and never again. They also create excessive interior noise.

I think that Falcon is cool, except for the Flowmasters.

Tx65Coupe, thanks for that tip. I was told by friends that it would sound ****ty, but the sound now is already annoying. How much do you think it might cost, ballpark, to do the setup you suggested?

Thanks to everyone else for their input, too.

I think it sounded perfect for what the car was then. It was pretty quiet, but still audible. If you want a little more sound the same type of muffler is available in Dynomax Super Turbo form.

I am going to scan and upload some old pictures soon. I'll try to post pics of that old setup.

Its hard to say how much exactly. Having it installed with 2 tailpipes that are 2 inch diameter will probably be about 100 dollars or so. Here are basically the parts I had.

Walker muffler 21907 at 61.95.

I had the chrome echo tips that were small back them but having the exhaust turned down at the valance looks better.

I'm thinking of changing the exhaust on my I6 as well. Its hard to think about though, because the previous owner had brand new factory everything installed manifold back about 1 year ago. Let me know what you go with and definitely post a video for future reference.
