Default Is this the correct air cleaner...

for a 1964-1/2 260 V-8? I question it now b/c I put the pipe on the right side manifold that connects to the snorkel on the air cleaner and they don't align (2nd pic).

Any thoughts are appreciated.

As far as I can tell the main blue portion of the air cleaner case is one piece. I honestly haven't tried to separate it. There are slots/cuts/notches in the base that "fit" on features of the carburetor that align it.

According to this find on a website (http://www.svs.com/zim/mustang/64legends.html) what I have is a Falcon air cleaner & it is not correct for my Mustang.

4. Smaller air cleaner assembly was used on early 64.5 V8 engines. (This is not true - the Falcon style air cleaner does not fit under the hood of a Mustang properly. See the rub spots on the snorkel and hood when the wrong style is used.)

The book I have shows the F code 260 ci engine "borrowed" the 64 Falcon air cleaner. Muscle Car Color History by Tom Corcoran.

Well, that certainly sheds a different light on things. My hood does close, but it does have the paint worn off marks on the hood and snorkel, as shown in my post before yours. I'm not sure what I'm going to do is entirely correct, but I'm going to put on the larger diameter/shorter height Mustang air cleaner so I can use the pipe that goes from the manifold up to the air cleaner snorkle.

Thanks for the additional information. So much to try to learn. I just joined MCA, I guess I could ask them as well....

No, it is not correct. Although some may have slipped through the factory with that wrong air cleaner on them, it would be an assembly line mistake. The 260 Mustang should have the same air cleaner as the 289. This is an April 64 260 Mustang. Original owner. The assembly drawings indicate this air cleaner on the 260 Mustang. The 64 260/289 air cleaner had some small differences, but appears identical to the later 65-67 air cleaner.

This 260 engine shows the Falcon air cleaner. The caption mentions some had that style air cleaner.
