people lived for years without seat belts and with just lap belts...whats wrong with the lapbelts?

iirc in early 65 mustangs seatbelts were still optional on the federal level

Stang65, yes the rear seat is simple to take out. The lower part is just clipped in, pull up on the front lower lip on the drivers/pass sides as there is a clip on each side, then tilt it up and pull it out. You will see the mounting holes in the seat well. You should just need the bolts/washers to hold the belts in.

Anyone who says lapbelts are 'safe enough' has never been in an accident with just lapbelts and had their chest slam the steering column and face hit the windshield. I was in a Tbone in my '70 and ripped the rearview mirror off with my head, wouldn't have happened with 3pt. belts.

"people lived for years without seat belts and with just lap belts" and many died due to no seatbelts or just lap belts I don't get the reasoning here? So 50yrs. of safety improvement (inertia reel belts, crumple zones, airbags, ABS, etc.) has not improved the ratio of survivable crashes? It's like saying people have smoked for 100yrs. and survived so smoking is fine why quit? Sorry I completely disagree with this rational, take your belts out if you like, I'll improve the safety of my car every way I can > 3pt. belts, collapseable column, disc brakes, seats with headrests, etc.

Thanks for the info. Jonk67. I took the rear seat out no problem but did not see any mounting holes for seats. Any suggestions?
