Default Timing chain advice (timing gear set)/ help

Hey

So my timing cover sprung a leak from between the block and the cover. The timing cover is badly pitted along the sealing surfaces and inside the water ports. I bought a new timing cover.

I also noticed that the timing chain is pretty loose and has been on there for the last 8 years probably.

I am highly considering purchasing the edelbrock 7892 timing gear drive set.

I know other than slightly improved timing accuracy they don't really offer much benefit I do like the idea they wont stretch.. But how noisy are they? This is suppose to be the "quiet" set does anyone have a video demonstrating the loundness of a quite timing gear set?

What do you think I should do?

Thanks

-Gun

DO NOT put a gear set on, they are HELL, I mean HELL on a camshaft. They are always loud, even the 'quiet' ones. And as far as stretch, a good Cloyes chain could go 100,000 miles no problems.

Yes, there is a slight increase in timing accuracy. But unless you're running a race car you'll never notice the difference.

Additionally if you have a 289/302 you will need to modify the inside of the timing cover to clear the gears.

Im not sure why a gear drive is hell on a cam.Ive had mine for about 16 years on different engines and never had any issues. Is that from personal experience or something you heard?

Yes

remove the bolt from the cam gear
Yes

am I going to need a puller?
Yes, one to remove the balancer for sure
and probably one to get the crank gear off, a small cheapo 2 or 3 finger will work fine here, it wont be hard to get off.

Iskwezm:

I have never personally had a problem with a gear drive, I have never personally used one. I have had friends that had them, and then replaced them. I do have to say in those cases the cam, and cam bearings for that matter, were broken in and used with a chain and then switched to a gear. That could have been the source of the issues.
