Default My gas gauge does not work.

Hey folks.

I bought my 68 several weeks ago and the guy told me the gas gauge doesn't work half the time. I thought, no problem, maybe a bad connection. The gauge worked and then stopped usually while driving. I got under the car and cleaned the connection at the tank. Still does not work. I put a test light on the wire at the tank and the test light blinks on and off. Is this a bad current or is it supposed to send an interemitent current to the sending unit? Any and all help is appreciated.

don't know about the intermittent current, but how exactly is your gauge malfunctioning? not moving, reading empty when its full or reading full when its empty?

if it reads empty when the tanks full, your float that makes the sending unit follow the gas level is probably leak...

not moving could be a number of things, including the gauge itself i suppose but i seem to remember soaring had a post on these gauges somewhere. maybe the best thing to do is drain the tank from below (there should be a screw with a square end somewhere) and take the sender out of the tank. get yourself a new one just in case, it comes witha new gasket and i recently replaced mine, that wasn't that expensive.

hope its that easy...

i think the sender works by send a negative current througth the wire to the guage. Take the wire off at the sending unit. Ground to to a good ground, and the guage should read full or past full. If it doesn't you have a bad guage or wiring.

Ya I have the same problem. If you ground the sending unit wire to the frame it should read full. but mine didn't.

The gauge reads empty all the time now. I took the wire off at the tank and grounded it. The gas gauge slowly moved to full. I guess my gauge is good. What is a ballpark figure for the sending unit?
