Question Want a 4spd tranny for my 460...HELP??!

I have a 69 Mustang FB with a 460. I currently have a C6, but want a 4 spd. I love cars but new at actually doing the work myself, (which I love) I just lack the knowledge. If y'all could point me in the right direction on what tranny I will need that will be solid for my car and revamping the rearend as well. Currently an 8, was thinking I should have a 9? Thanks for any and all help and info!!

Kind of pricy, but there are some options here....

I know Ford put 4 speed truck transmissions behind 460s but I am not sure if they ever put a car 4 speed behind one of the Lima (429/460) engines. You MIGHT have to rely on the $aftermarket$.

Someone here should know better than me.

You need a big block toploader 4 speed...They have a much beefier input shaft than the smallblock toploaders..They are pricey though so aftermarket is a good way to go if you have the funds....A 9 inch rear would be some good insurance as well behind a torque monster 460..

That looks like a great deal but I think the tail stock is longer than what was stock on a mustang...It seems to have two shifter mounting locations so it might work with a shorter driveshaft but I would do some research to be sure..

Default THX!!

Thanks alot for all the input! Y'all have forgotten more than I know! What's the better route, having someone rebuild a tranny or buy a new/rebuilt one? Thanks again, y'all are great.

OMG JMD, and sorry for changing the topic Jonesy4410, so....I am building a 428 to replace my 302 and I will be able to keep my 5 speed Tremec that I have right now? I'm looking at those bell housings and they say that they'll convert, is that correct?

Anyone ever considered putting really high gears in thier rear end and running a low geared ZF5 from a truck? Bullet proof trans and should be relatively easy to find and cheap in a junk yard. kinda long throws, but that should be fixable... Just a thought.
