Default Limitations of a T5

Its been cold out and I needed something to do, started researching what it would take to swap a t5 into a mustang. This probably wont happen with my current 67 but im definitely doing it with my next one.

Seems like the 90-93 t5s are the way to go? iirc they are a bit stronger then the earlier 80's T5s.

My question is what exactly can they handle? what engine would you feel safe bolting this too? would it handle intake, heads, exhaust on a 289?

should handle that, we have put them behind 330 ish hp and tq and never had a problem think it was a 88 or something t5 we used.

IIRC the 90-93 are the most desirable. I have heard that earlier ones will not do as well at the 330 ft/lbs of torque mentioned, but I think that it depends largely on how hard you are driving it or what rear end you are running. I think that it stands to reason that if you have 4.11 gears and are doing hard launches in first you will break something sooner or later.

theres no actual number of actual torque it can handle. I wouldnt base it off what they are rated at. I broke a WC T5 behind my n/a 289. My "weaker" 85 T5 behind my turbo stroker making upwards of 500 at the wheels has lived for years.

True, it's like Iskwezm said. I have a friend who has a 427W in his stang and cuz he can't hook up, it doesn't hurt the trans. If he got it to hook up, there might be a prob.

the 90-93 trans are most desirable. I have 249 tag series stating cobra spec its rated higher than a non cobra spec and just lower than a z spec. (289 Ft/lbs for non cobra spec vs 310 for cobra spec I think)

AND if I recall correct the rating is based off a 100,000 miles. So a 310 rating might handle 400 ftlbs for 50,000 miles or one hard launch with sticky tires at the strip....

sweet, im 99% sure the car will never see the strip, just a fun street car.

do you guys think its worth the 2500 for the whole setup (minus the clutch pedal assembly)? or would i be better off looking for a fox body to scavenge from?

I don't think it is worth $2500. What clutch setup will you use?

T5 - ~$500
Trans crossmember - $135
Trans mount - You should be able to reuse the stock one
Flywheel - $200
Bellhousing ~$100 (what I paid for mine)
Clutch - ~$160-200
Clutch fork(needed if not with bellhousing) -$50

Cable setup - $240
Hydraulic setup - $550

Use a fox body bellhousing so that you can go without the $135 dollar spacer. Also your driveshaft will work there is nothing you need to change about the yokes. If anything it will just need to be shortened an inch or so.

With Cable clutch you are at ~$1400, then you just need the pedal assembly. You will need a new starter for the fox body bellhousing.

thinking just the cable operated one.

if i did it myself:
use the c4 starter from my 289 (iirc it should work)
fab a crossmember
buy the clutch pedal setup
find a t5 from a junked fox body, get it rebuilt or rebuild it myself (depending on how hard it is)
iirc the stock driveshaft might work, although i may need to remove an inch or so
the slip yoke for the c4 is 23 spline, i think the t5 is also a 23 spline.

2500 is alot...unless it includes a new t5 z spec or better.

Look at moderndriveline.com I think I picked up a new crossmember from him for about 120 bucks.

Look at mustangsteve for the pedal and cable setup
