Is this a good carb?

I'm more of an edelbrock guy, but yea that's a good carb for you. Are you getting it used or something? If so just go ahead and buy a rebuild kit too. One thing I've learned with carbs is never buy a used one without planning to rebuild it.

yea rebuilding a carb isn't too complicated. If you get a rebuild kit it should come with instructions on how to rebuild and recalibrate everything. Usually takes me about 4 hours including cleaning everything really well.

ya I just rebuilt my 2bbl holley and it was nothing. This one is used and of course I would rebuild it asap!
Is Edelbrock a better choice? I have been looking at the 1406, I can get one of those for cheap too. Are they easier to work with/tune than holley?

I really don't have much experience with holley so it might be better to ask someone who has a lot of experience with both, but from what I've always heard is edelbrock's carbs tend to be more set it and forget it. Holley's carbs tend to offer a lot more tuning options, but you have to mess with them all the time to keep it running right.
both brands make fine carbs, but I've always had such good experiences with edelbrock that I have no need to test much with the other. I'd still stick with the holley for $80 if it's a good carb (no internal damage to the carb such as idle screw seats, bent butterfly valves, etc.).

I actually just got done giving my 8 year old 1406 edelbrock it's second rebuild. Went smooth as silk.
