On the second performance build they used better heads again for the chevy...320cc heads vs only 290s for the ford.

I haven't built a 429/460.... This link might have some more insight than I can offer.
BUT, these are good engines that can make good power easy enough, but they ain't cheap to hot rod...
400 at the rear wheels will be a lot cheaper than 500 at the rear wheels. I am sure if you start with a strong engine, with the right intake, cam and exhaust, 400 at the rear wheels should be doable for less than 3K, 500 at the rear wheels for 3K is going to be tougher, impossible if your engine is tired IMO.

At least that what I was thinking so I had to do a little checking:

Just in case you're curious, power loss for various auto transmissions:
Please remember these are approximate values, and were provided by Car Craft Magazine.
Powerglide_____18 hp
TH-350________36 hp
TH-400________44 hp
Ford_C-6______55-60 hp
Ford_C-4______28 hp
Ford_FMX______25 hp
Chrysler_A904__25 hp
Chrysler_727___45 hp
Damn that C6 suks up a lot of HP

Why do you need to make at least 400rwhp?..Do you have a certain ET in mind or?..Like I said earlier have you ran the car at the track to get an idea of what kind of power you are making now?..

For what it's worth, 500 at the flywheel for this engine should be like falling off a log. The above mentioned top end kit would be a good place to start...
Match your parts....
Jump on a 429/460 forum and get some info from folks who have experience with these engines, they are SELDOM used on classic Mustangs, so the experience level with these is all but nonexistent here. (Thus the unusual lack of opinions here, we are usually full of opinions!)
Come back and tell us what you find out, I would like to know.

The heads that he has (police interceptor) are actually very good heads. They are very similar to the CJ heads with bigger valves and ports than stock 429/460 heads...On a decent 460 shortblock (9.5-10:1 compression) with the right camshaft and intake/carb it should easily make around 500hp....
I have an old car craft article from 1984 where they used the 1968-70 style Dove heads with slightly bigger valves and mild porting on the exhaust, on a 10.4:1 compression 460..With a comp cams 292 hydraulic camshaft(244dur@.050 .544L) and offy port o sonic intake it made 507 hp and 530ft/lbs of torque..It did require an 850dp carb to get there though..Initial dyno tests with a 750cfm carb cost 50 hp!
