painting the drive shaft, yolk too
So, I am going to paint an unpainted, almost rust free driveshaft. How much to do? Part of the yolk up to going in the tranny?
Would Can hold up well or should I take it to a shop?

Scuff the surface with some sandpaper (I would scuff with 220 or so) til it is uniformly "satin" and paint. You wont need to prime and sand (360 or 400) unless you want a smoother surface.
Shiny metal won't hold paint, but scuffed, the paint should stick forever. A spray bomb will work ok here.

My fluency in "build" is limited.

I would just scuff it up with sandpaper as suggested and us spray from a can. It will not be visible and the paint is only there to keep surface rust away. No need to spend a ton of time and money on a part that will never be seen and is likely to get chipped from normal usage.
