Possibly in the market for a 429
Found a 70's 429 with block and crank for $150, ran when pulled. How much are these to rebuild? Do you want to use aftermarket heads or are the stock ones good with some modification? Is the motor worth the build cost as compared to a windsor or clevor build? I'd like to get 600 HP out of it if anything. Not a big block kind of guy so any help would be appreciated!

600hp from a big block isn't hard just takes money,But with that kinda power you will have to have a 9 inch rear end a trans built to handle that power,Big block springs in the front and a bigger radiator and big block motor mounts and brackets too.

I was wondering more as towards the price to build a decent(500+ HP) 429 vs. a decent clevor or windsor. I don't have much experience with big block building so I don't know prices very well, or any common head/cam/intake combos that are popular among the big block enthusiasts.
Any info is good info!

If you get the good early heads 68-71 you can make 500hp fairly easily with a big block....Much over that is going to get pretty expensive with any type engine and will take very good parts and machine work..The big advantage of these engine is they already have lots of cubic inches and can be stroked for lots more..They also have good tough blocks that can handle a lot of power...About the only drawbacks are that they are heavy and physically take up alot of room...Since they were a factory option in your car it shouldn't be hard to fit one in though..

Thanks for the feedback everyone, I really REALLY would like to do a 429 but I'm still researching the 408 clevor idea rattling around in my head...clevor is much more up my alley though. Going to a swap meet in a couple weeks at Maple Grove Raceway up here in PA, I'll have to see what I can find!
