Stuck axle bearing race
#11
Sounds crazy but if you have a welder, run a bead down the center of the race all the way around. It will shrink considerably and come out easily.
The way I do it, however, is I take my dremel with a thin cut-off wheel and I cut a notch in the race about 2/3's through taking care to not damage the axle. Next, take a cold chisel and give the race a good wack or two on the edge next to your cut. It will snap easily.
I replaced all the bearings on my Suburban rear end a few months ago and almost all the bearings were partially welded to the axle at the top side of all the bearings where all the weight rides. I had to cut about 1/2 of them. My shop press couldn't budge them either. The slide hammer shattered part of one of them and cut my thumb pretty deep.
I did tons of research and the weld bead and cutting with a dremel type tool were the two best options I found.
Heating the housing will do nothing.

Well I finally got the race out today. I decided to just go ahead and cut it. About a quarter of the way through the race shifted and seemed to let off a lot of tension so I tried using the puller. It took 5 tries cause the puller kept slipping but it finally came out. Now to figure out what needs replacing in my front end.
