Default Shifter linkage not returning to neutral on 1971 three speed

Hello!

I have a 1971 fastback with a three speed manual transmission.

I have owned it for six years whitout any real problems, but recently one of the two shifter linkage (the one to the right) stopped returning to neutral when I change gear from first to second.

I happens sometimes and the result is that I have to drive it on first gear to the garage and then crawl under the car and manually push it.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Thomas

Maybe they are called shifter rods. Here is a picture:

I would start with rebuilding the shifter and replacing any shift rod bushings that are replaceable. There should be kits available if you look around.

Agreed. Rebuild the shifter with a 4 speed rebuild kit. The 4sp kit from Glazier's comes with better hardware and will work on the 3sp shifter.

Once you're done, readjust the shift linkage per the factory shop manual.

OK, so I would come a long way with new rod bushings?

Would this kit do the trick? http://www.drakeautomotivegroup.com/...7.aspx?wid=141

No, I mean the kit for the 4sp. Also, a set of the Mr Gasket/Hurst shift linkage bushings wouldn't hurt.

Thanks,

I will get a closer look at the car today. I will start with cleaning the shifter rods, put it in neutral and run a 1/4 allen key through the alignment hole and see if it's adjusted correctly. http://www.ranchero.us/forums/showthread.php?t=7103

If it doesn't do the trick I will order the kit from Glazier/Nolan. It seems strange to order a 4-speed kit to a 3-speed. I will keep you updated.
