Default How original is an undercoating?

After installing new floors I painted the underside the original oxide red, after getting the car back from the body shop I noticed they put a black under coating on it. I am pretty upset because I was happy to have the red oxide to make it original. Do you think in 68 Ford ever put black under coatings on the car? At least in the wheel wells? Is it in anyway original?

unless youre getting judge for 100% restoration i personally would rather have under coating..im sure dealers out there did it as an option just like new cars to make a few extra bucks

i dunno about you i never look at the bottom of my car unless im changing the oil

Under coating didn't become standard tell the 80s i believe but all dealers offered it as a option. If its a concours car it matters but a normal car and normal show car i would rather have it on my car.

thanks for the replies guys. That makes me feel a bit better. My car is definitely not Concours but I am doing an extensive restoration while trying to stay as correct and original as possible.

I would be pissed. You better make sure they didn't charge you for it. If they did, take it back and tell them to make it how you wanted it. But on the same hand, the undercoating will protect your car, so if it was free, I would keep it. But I'd probably still call and bitch about it.

I would find out what kind of undercoating they sprayed. If it is a quality product, I wouldn't be too hard on them, even though it is not the finish you wanted. EIther way, be sure you did not pay for it.

April's 68' Coupe and 71' Mach 1 both got a thick almost tar like undercoating I assume from the dealerships that they were sold at.

That old "Known to the state of California to cause cancer and birth defects" tar really did a good job.
