The only safe way to do it is change all the suspension and drivetrain parts to the v8 ones,If not i wouldn't drive it even with front disc those spindles are smaller the front springs with the weight of a v8 it will be all over the road. Its cheaper to do it right the first time then to cut corners and end up doing it over again.

Auto -
AOD if you do any highway
C4 for reliability long term if its a cruiser

Manual
t-5 if for highway
4 speed if you are trying to keep it vintage-y

4R70W's are NOT exclusive the V6's. My 1994 F150 5.0 truck has one. I like 4R70W's but the extra $600+ for a controller is a bit much for my taste. The less expensive AOD's work fine for me.
The simplest solution is another C4. C4's are great transmissions but I'm addicted to having overdrive.

Only the v6 4r70w has the right bolt pattern for a small block,The mod motor has its own bolt pattern that will not work.

the explorer 5.0's used a 4r70w with a standard 302 bolt pattern...

Controllers from Bauman are under $500. The newer 1998 - 2002 4R70Ws were stronger than the older version and can handle up to 500hp while the previous version were good up to 375hp.

You need to be careful with bolt patters, one out of a V6 will fit, one out a V8 mod will not. I paid $100 for my 4R70w, then sent it to FB Performance to have it gone through and setup to handle 600hp....just in case
