I have had an ignitor for years with zero issues thus far.

Hi,
I've been running the same 1st generation ignitor for 6-7 years in my OEM distributor. I've only recently began to carry a spare unit, just in case. If installed correctly, I feel they are very reliable improvements. Now, I've probably jinxed my "sparkie" LOL!
BTW, where can I get a hula-hoop like that?

looking at your photo's - that failure mode is indicative of the PU coil shorting which is a parts issue. I'd get in touch with Pertronix and ask for a replacement.

Another issue I had with earlier units.. you can NOT leave the key on in the ignition position without the car running. It will burn out the unit.

yes, Key on will fry the unit..not as bad as that was though, haha! sorry..
Also, as stated previously, the correct coil should be used too. Flamethrower 1.5Ohm coil is the one that would be right for that ignitor. The factory pink resistor wire should also be bypassed so that you supply 12volts to the coil at all times

I had pertronix ignitor II with a stock coil for about 2 years. I then switched over to DSII.

Never had a problem out of the ignitor II.

I never had this problem and I always kept it in the on position in the mornings. I drove mine through high school and everyday I would sit out in the parking lot listening to music for at least 30 minutes.

One of the improvements of the Ignitor II over the Ignitor I was the "key left on" protection. So that's why you (1slow67) didn't have an issue while parked and listening to music. (But I wonder if you weren't really using the "ACC" mode anyway?)

And now that I think more about it, I think someone on this board once fried an Ignitor I because they started car and went inside while it warmed up. Somewhere shortly after the engine stalled before he came back out. Since it was obviously a "key left on" condition, the Ignitor burned up.

Hi
Great comment! I don't know that I knew the difference between the 1st and second generation Pertronix.
Happy trails...
