notes on 66 hard top torque boxes
Was fitting torque boxes in my 66 coupe this weekend. Picked up the dynacorn 2-piece units. These are 13 ga, yes, 13 ga! These were identified as the '68-70 units, but fit the 65-66 hard top. The 65-66 convertible units are supposedly different. The trimming was minimal, and fit was better than expected. I noticed something odd and couldn't put my finger on it after I got everything trimmed and fit, ready to weld. If it was a snake it woulda bit me. They're missing the fold down lip that allows you to weld them to the bottom horizontal lip of the rocker. There's two options, either run a weld where the horizontal plate meets the veritical rocker, or I prefer to fab a 90* one inch angle iron and attach it to both the torque box and lower lip of the rocker. I'll work on the drivers side next weekend. Love this stuff, 90% prep, 10% welding...... Other than that one issue, these are nice units and easy to put in. And yes, it is an all day job.

I've been working on my boxes for a while now mostly because I don't have too much time to work on my car. They have been nothing short of a nightmare but I think that has a lot to do with the fact that I am a complete novice at this stuff. Lots of trimming, lots of reshaping, lots of crying and questioning my manhood. Passenger side is done and almost done with the driver side. I got mine from Mustangs Unlimited and the fit was...... Not very good.
