Starter and flywheel grinding
68 with original c-4 trans
So my car died in the middle of the Lincoln tunnel and while frantically trying to get the car started fried my starter. When I tried to turn the keep you could hear a grinding noise. Brought it to a shop where they replaced the starter, and flywheel (and got a new torque converter) but when they tried to start it the grinding was still there.
There solution was to use spacers to back the starter up and now there is no grinding (probably chipped up the flywheel again) but they seem to think something is missing from the tranny to push/keep the flywheel back. Transmissions are not my forte so do you think the previous owner maybe forgot something? I have had the car for 1yr 1/2 and 8-9k miles no starting issues.

The frlywheel does not move. It is bolted directly to the engine crank. Then the torque converter bolts directly to it. There is however, tw3o places to shim it. There is a flywheel shime that goes between the flywheel and the crank that is very thin. Most cars do not need one. If yours did not have it in there to begin with you prolly dont need it.
Ans, starter shims are also available to move the starter back away from the flywheel to help align it. Most cars though do not need these shims.
I went through a simialar problem a couple months ago. ended up going through 3 starters in a 1 day period. I was just getting bad parts. Each unit tested bad once i took them back to oriellys to have them checked. Then i broke down and went to napa and paid twice as much for the starter and havent had an issue sine i installed it.
