68 Coupe carburator and header questions
I just recently purchased a 68 Coupe with a 289. I have a couple of questions.
1) It has a Edelbrock 650 carburetor and an Offenhauser 4V intake manifold. Is the 650 carburator to big?
2) It also has the original exhaust manifold that I want to replace with headers. Here is the problem it has been lowered 1" in the front and 2" in the rear. Do I need to go with the shorty headers or could I use tri-y
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

IMO, without all the other things to go with it (cam, heads and gears) , 650 CFM is too much carb for a stock 289 and performance will be affected.
Shorty's would be my choice due to less ground clear from the drop

Bite the bullit and go with a set of FPA headers. My 66 Fastback has the shelby drop and lowered 1/2" and my longtubes still do not affect clearance. they tuck against frame rail with about 1/2 below rail.

Thanks jlg2002. So what cam, heads, and gears would you recommend to get the most out of the 289. I'm not looking to race, I just want it to perform well. See what I have come up with below. What is your opinion.
Edelbrock Camshaft:1500-6500 RPM, lobe lift intake/exhauts 0.496/0.520
Edelbrock E-Street Heads: 170cc intake, 60cc exhaust and 2.02 intake valve dia.

650 is too much...575 holley was too much for my most stock 302 with a c4 auto. I went with the 289 hipo manifold (Virginia classic mustang keeps them in stock) and got the matching H pipe so that there would be less fab work for the exhaust shop. Unless you are changing major engine components you wont notice the power gains vs the money you will have to spend.
