FWIW, in a drag radial you probably won't notice much difference.. Full slicks is where you see a tremendous amount of sidewall flex.. In my Cobra I ran a high performance DOT track tire made for autocross.. So it didn't have much flex side to side but still had more than enough grip to launch my car in the straigh and I was making about the same amount of power you're looking to make.. Full on fat tires in the rear don't really come into play until higher power numbers. You can get really good traction out of a 275/40/17 easily.

Can't help you there, sorry I don't know the fitment on 64-70.. I will say that is a very tall tire though.

So which is it.....500HP motor or high 400 to the back wheels.....you can't have both

I have 400 at the back tire.

On 5 leafs with traction masters and a watts I was 11.7.
On 3 link I was 11.4.

Bear in mind I run these numbers in an AOD car that I start at idle. I don't stall it up and 'launch'

Here I am doing my old man thing.

Light turns green....I drive down the track

A real 500 RWHP will require a full cage in the car because of the speed which would be sub 11s. As it stands now I 'should' be able to dip alot lower but I drive it to keep it around the 11.5 mark because I go only occasionally and for fun.

wow your car rips!! great ride you got yourself there!! im looking to make close to 500 to the wheels...i say high 400s low 500s but really my goal is 500 rwhp...i just need to see how extreme my 408 will be for the street. im on long island...closest track is new jersey so it really wont be seeing any track time except for super rare occasions. I love the look of the 17s...and if i can fit the nice 275 wide drag radial ill get some good traction and good handling too...however i havent come across any pics of a 67 coupe with a 275/60/15 tire on it...id just like to compare the pictures side by side and see which look i like better but it seems like more people just go with the 17s

I had 275/40/17's and liked them. I now have a 26X11.50X17 MT ET Street and they gave a slightly fatter sidewall stick pretty good. Might be another option to consider.

i'm definitley looking to get the MT ET Street...I heard those were best for the street. What type of rims are you running (style wise).

Dodgestang...are your 17s American Racing Torque Thrust IIs? I looked on their site and i cant find them with 5.5 BS

On my 65 I run the 275 40 17 on an 8 inch wide wheel (and only at the track I don't street it like that). They are a much tighter fit so the 8 inch wheel shrinks the tire a bit.

On my 68 I don't run Ar wheels...I run MB old school wheels in 17x9.5 with the 275 40 17 tire

With 17s you can run some very nice brakes too....that you can't with the 15s and if you are really a street car.....with a super high power level...you should have super nice stopping power.

You make a good point about the brakes...I never even thought about running larger ones but now that's another option! on the 65 you just showed a picture of what rims are those (name/dimensions/bs)? Those are not the 17x8 that you run at the track right? sorry about all of the questions...i know nothing when it comes to wheels

i was thinking about going with FR500s...17x9.5s in the back. they have a 5.94" backspacing which im pretty sure that would work...if it pulls it in too much i would run a spacer? for the front I have heard that people use 17x9.5s and send them out to get narrowed down to 17x8s

edit: they also come in 17x10.5 with a 6.8" BS...hmmm
