69 Mach 1 Engine build
So im looking for a engine for my 69 mach 1. i have a stock 351w 2barrel 3 speed. im looking for some more power. i found a 351c stroked into a 396 with forged internals on craigs list for 4k. i called the local machine shop to build up the stock engine in the mach 1 now they said they can do around 400 hp for 4k. what is the best route to go? should i buy the built engine off craigs list and pull the stock engine and just keep for later to build back to stock, when and if i want to? Here's the link to the engine i was looking at. please tell me if you think this would be a good price. he said he has about 7,700 into the engine and hes gonna send me the paper work later tonight. please let me know if you have any ideas!
Thanks

So the numbers match? If that is the case keep the stocker and get your engine builder to build you an engine (probably be more than 4k no that you are not supplying the engine). On that note, find an old 351 engine from a truck at the junk yard and have them build that.

here was my thinking. he says he put in about 7700 into the engine. so if i buy this one off craigs list and take the stock numbers matching engine out of the car plus 3 speed tranny and store away. i can have fun with the loads of power till i wanna put it back to stock. it was my dads car from back in the day so it has been in the family for a while. So at this point i never plan on selling it. so i guess my quesiton is would it be a good idea to buy this aftermarket engine off criagslist and take out the stock and save it for when i want to go back to original. also does this engine seem like a good price? what should i look for when buying it?

Seems like a good price. Probably can get it down a little. I would check cam and do a little research on the performance range. Also need to see rear end gears and stall recommneded for it. Also sure you know but it you will probably have to build your trans up.
If you can get yours built for same price I think I would go that route. I would not worry about modifying yours unless you are going concourse. I doubt you really will ever go back and will have a engine laying around. Been there done that. If I could get for same price from a builder you can trust I would probably go that way in case of any problems. If not for that price I would go for it.

i guess my take was if he really put 7,700 into this engine, its gonna cost me 7,700 to get the engine i have to that level. If i take to machine shop he said i can get about 400-450 hp for around 4k. im just looking for the best deal for the money. but i guess if you go craigslist u never know what could be wrong with i. and machine shop you know everything.
