speedometer gear

speedometer gear
I am replacing the speedometer cable on my '66 289. The cable itself was easy enough to find, but I'm having a hard time finding the gear and clip. I'm hesitant to use the old gear even though it is in decent shape (the clip and O ring look fine so I DO plan to re-use them), although I may have to go down this path if I can't find one. Any advice about finding a new one or using the old?
Thanks,
Sue

I would just reuse them. If you still think its a bad idea I actually got the speedo gear I needed from a ford dealership.
You can also get them from NPD I think..

It's hit or miss with me. I think that mine is still off by a factor of one gear. Shoot for an 18 or 19 and then work your way from there. Everytime you change tire size or rear end gears you'll need a new speedo gear. Also, just look at the one that you have, it should have a number on it, a colour or just count the gears.
My wife and I used our iphone gps's to find out if the speedo was acurate. We both loaded them up and I drove at 60mph on the highway for about 4-5 minutes to get an accurate as possible reading. Both gps's measured different speed along with the speedo itself but I took a rough average and went with it to buy a gear. I got a black one, I think a 20t. You can google it, there is a way to measure out a 100ft or so and tire circum etc...but that takes too much work for me.

Thanks to both of you. I might check the 2 Ford dealerships here in town tomorrow when (hopefully) they will be open. I'd like to get her back on the road. The gear is yellow (could have been white and has discolored) and has 16 teeth. Tires are stock and the car has had no rear end modifications so I am assuming I am getting accurate readings. Thanks again for your help.
